Nigel Slater’s Toast

by Henry Filloux-Bennett • directed by Camilla Asher
Wednesday 21st – Saturday 24th April 2027

Take a trip down memory lane! See the 1960s and 70s through the eyes, ears and mouth of a young Nigel Slater (cook, food writer, journalist, broadcaster). This coming-of-age play is based on the award-winning memoir; Toast: The Story of a Boy’s Hunger, and like the book, it is delightful, bittersweet, funny and will leave you wanting more.

In his personal, intimate and sensory style, Nigel shares his culinary experiences growing up age 9 to 16, including his love of toast, cooking with his mother, mince pies, his first time eating spaghetti bolognaise, making the perfect Victoria sandwich, dad’s Walnut Whip way, yucky eggs and gorgeous raspberries. Nigel faces cultural barriers at home and away. We see him have to deal with grief at an early age, explore his sexuality, overcome prejudice and focus on what makes him happy. An excellent recipe for life!
